About Me

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I taught Special Education between August and December of 1973 at a Special Education Center in Panama City, Republic of Panama in Central America, my native country. After that I taught ESOL to Panamanian students at a private, bilingual high school for three school years in 1974, 1975 and 1976. From 1977 through 1981 I again taught ESOL to adult international students at the Intensive English Institute at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana while pursuing a Master's and a PhD. I then taught Spanish at the middle school and high school levels from 1994 through June, 2014. I thoroughly enjoyed creating my own materials and never, ever used a teacher's manual while teaching. I am now a retired teacher. The photo on my store profile was taken in June, 2015 when I received the Excellence in Education (Ed'ies) award, the highest honor conferred to NH educators.

MY TEACHING STYLE
I always believed firmly in strong discipline in my classes combined with showing students that I cared for them personally and had their best interests and futures in mind. I am also convinced that everyone has his or her own learning style and many of us use a combination of these whether it's an auditory, visual or manipulative ability.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT
In high school I was a member of the National Honor Society and throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies I was always an honor student. As a faculty member I was always regarded as a 'highly qualified' instructor by the administration. I WAS ELECTED AS THE WORLD LANGUAGE TEACHER OF THE YEAR (2014) FOR THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE and the New Hampshire Excellence in Education (ED'ies) Award. What a great way to complete my teaching career!

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
I did my undergraduate work at St. Mary's Dominican College (now closed) in New Orleans, Louisiana where I majored in Elementary and Special Education (dual major). My Master's and PhD. are in ESOL/Bilingual Education and I earned both degrees at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
I am the parent of four adult children, two sons and two daughters. My husband has a PhD. in Electrical Engineering and we met at the University of Illinois while in graduate school. He recently retired so we are now both enjoying a new phase in our lives.
